In an incredible turn of events in Serie A, just one day after his team Como’s surprising victory against Atalanta, Raphael Varane has announced his retirement from professional football. It remains unclear how Varane will be reintegrated into the Como organization, whether in a technical or managerial role. The only hint he offered in his announcement post was: “And now, off the pitch, a new life begins. I will remain at Como, just without wearing boots and shin guards. I look forward to sharing more about it soon.”
Varane was grandly announced by Como on July 28, 2024, less than two months ago, in a statement that included quotes from manager Cesc Fabregas, who had strongly advocated for his signing: “Raphaël is a special player, and his signing is proof of the ambition we have for this club. He has won a lot in his career, and the experience he has gained in two of the best leagues in the world cannot be underestimated. I can’t wait to start working with him.”
The French defender’s only appearance for Como was on August 11 during a Coppa Italia match against Genoa, where he suffered a muscle issue in his left leg just 20 minutes into the game. He was forced to leave the pitch and spent the rest of the match on the bench with ice on his knee. This was yet another injury in a career heavily impacted by numerous physical problems. When it became clear that his recovery time would not be short, Como decided, in agreement with the player, to exclude him from the Serie A roster, with plans for his reintegration in January. However, Varane’s decision to retire from professional football has officially ended any possibility of seeing him play in Serie A: “It is with immense pride and a sense of fulfillment that I announce my retirement from the game we all love.”
The club’s ownership group commented on his signing in July, stating, “We are excited to have Raphaël in our family; his experience will significantly enhance our ambitions for growth both on and off the pitch.” While the French champion did not have the opportunity to make an impact on the field, he will now try to make his mark in football in a new capacity, without the boots on his feet.
