WASHINGTON (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS) – President Donald Trump had a long talk with Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin in the Oval Office. One of the first topics discussed at the beginning of the bilateral was tariffs. “We have a huge deficit with Ireland,” Trump said. “Ireland got pharmaceuticals through smart taxation, the European Union has been very tough,” he continued.
At the end of the meeting, the White House leader was asked by reporters about economic issues. “In a very short period of time we have done very well,” Trump said, also referring to the prices of eggs and oil, which have fallen in recent hours. Trump was also asked about his assessment of the many Irish who are present in the United States without the necessary documentation. “I think the Irish love me,” Trump said. “We don’t want to do anything to hurt Ireland.
Another important issue on which Trump was asked by reporters is related to the education sector. According to the U.S. president, many of the people in it “are not working at all.” “We are keeping the best and meanwhile many of them are not showing up for work, they are not doing well.” Trump was also asked about the war in Ukraine, particularly Russian President Vladimir Putin, on which the White House chief preferred to keep a low profile: “I’m not going to comment, we have people who go there, but we don’t have people who have talked to him. I think a deal makes sense for Russia.”
Finally, the president took stock of the war in the Middle East: “We are working with Israel to try to solve the problem.” During his visit to Washington, Martin repeatedly emphasized the important relationship between the United States and Ireland, highlighting the many Irish business activities in the United States, pointing out that at present Trump appears to be the only president to have truly invested in Ireland. The agenda for the visit includes a lunch for Trump and Martin on Capitol Hill and finally the traditional St. Patrick’s Day reception in the East Room. This is an event that annually takes place a week in advance of St. Patrick’s Day.
