ROMA (ITALPRESS) – From 1 to 4 September will be held at the University of Fortaleza, Brazil, the 15th World Conference on Cultural Rights, co-organised by the Department of Law and Digital Society of the Unitelma Sapienza University. This year’s edition is dedicated to a 20-year budget of the Ibero-American Charter on Cultural Rights. As usual, speakers from all over the world will participate in the conference, as well as several Culture Ministers and senior public leaders working in culture. The meeting of Fortaleza reflects our commitment to strengthening international academic cooperation on cultural rights, immaterial cultural heritage, community participation and the comparative right of cultural heritage. The conference also confirms the role of the Global Universities Alliance for Cultural Rights as a growing platform to link research, education, political dialogue and shared actions between countries and legal traditions. To open the works there will be, for UnitelmaSapienza, Professor Pier Luigi Petrillo, ordinary of comparative public law and director of the UNESCO Chair on the intangible cultural heritage.
The second day of the work will host the first international meeting of the Global Universities Alliance for Cultural Rights, the network, founded by UnitelmaSapienza and UNIFOR during the Rome Conference of November 2025, and which today brings together the leading experts of cultural rights from 20 universities, from Australia to Argentina, from Brazil to Holland, from Tunisia to Great Britain, from Algeria to Iran, from Mexico to Turkey to Portugal. The meeting of the Global Alliance, dedicated to the theme of “Human (in)security”, “will bring together scholars from different regions and legal traditions to explore how contemporary forms of human insecurity affect the enjoyment and protection of cultural rights”, explains Professor Petrillo, co-founder of the Alliance. “From conflicts, displacements and climate change to restrictions on civic spaces, technological transformation and emerging cultural insecurities,” explains the teacher, “the meeting will address cultural rights both as threatened rights and as instruments for dignity, resilience, participation and peace.” The works will be opened by Humberto Cunha, ordinary of constitutional law to UNIFOR and co-founder of the Global Alliance, by Alexandra Xanthaki, Special Rapporteur of the United Nations on Cultural Rights and effective member of the Global Alliance, and by Sara di Luca, collaborator of the UNESCO Chair of Unitelma Sapienza and executive manager of the Global Alliance.
