US and Italy calls for 21-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon

The United States and allied nations have requested an immediate 21-day ceasefire along the Israel-Lebanon border. Following discussions held yesterday at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, they reiterated their support for an immediate and sustainable cessation of hostilities in Gaza. The ceasefire proposed by the US would apply to the Blue Line, the demarcation line between Israel and Lebanon, allowing for negotiations toward a potential diplomatic resolution to the conflict, according to a senior official in President Joe Biden’s administration.

“We urge all parties, including the governments of Israel and Lebanon, to immediately approve the temporary ceasefire,” stated a joint declaration from the countries published by the White House, which includes signatories such as Italy, Canada, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and the European Union.

Israeli broadcaster Channel 12 cited a source from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office indicating that Jerusalem has given the green light for the ceasefire to initiate negotiations. Meanwhile, the newspaper Israel Today reported that American officials stated a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah would take effect within hours. On its part, the daily Yedioth Ahronoth reported that the “Jewish Power” party, led by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, will meet following news of an agreement for a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.
