Interview with GENESI, Italian DJ in lineup at Coachella

We meet GENESI, the DJ and Italian producer guest at the Coachella festival waiting for this year’s second and last weekend.

This is your first time at Coachella: what is this moment for you, on a personal and artistic level?

It’s a real important step. A moment when you realize that you have worked in the right direction until now. At the same time, it gives you that extra boost to continue and do better, without just repeating what you have already done.

When you get on this stage, what do you want the audience to try in the first 30 seconds?

Above all, I want people to feel the energy right away and enjoy that feeling!

Does your sound mix different genres: do you live it as a freedom or as a challenge in today’s music industry?

I see it as a freedom. It gives me space to move between different sounds without feeling stuck in one direction.

How would you describe your evolution from the beginning to the present in a phrase?

My sound is definitely matured, but it always remains rooted in my style.

Is there a message you want to convey with this performance?

The only thing I really want is that people have fun, live time and understand what GENESI represents!

Your shows are very physical and expressive: how much does the body count in your storytelling?

It’s important, but I think music must always come first. The body is more a reflection of what you and the public are listening, not the contrary.

What inspires you most at this moment: the chaos of the world or your inner world?

Honestly, much of my inspiration comes from reading during the tours. Books help me detach and enter a different mental dimension.

How to test budgets and accessibility for a wider audience?

Much of the experimentation takes place in the studio, but then I text everything in my DJ sets. If I see something really works, then I carry it forward and share it more.

There was a moment in your career where you thought: “is this really happening”?

Playing at Coachella is definitely one of those moments. I didn’t think we’d be here just a year after my first full tour in the United States!

What role does identity play in your music today?

It’s the most important part of my work. I try to evolve my sound without ever losing my identity.

If I had to define this phase of your career with a word?

Evolution.

What surprised you more than a festival like Coachella?

The thing that surprised me the most is to continually meet new people and see that everyone is on the same positive vibration. It is really perceived that it is a special moment for everyone, surrounded by a lot of inspiration.

Do you take the audience of a festival differently than your headliner shows?

In my shows I have more time to explore and bring the audience on a longer journey. In festivals like this, everything is more concentrated: you have an hour to create an intense and memorable set, mixing new music and more known tracks.

What is something fans don’t understand to the bottom of your creative process?

The process can be very unpredictable. Sometimes ideas come quickly, inspired by something I’m living at that time, sometimes it takes a lot more time to really find the right direction.

After Coachella, where are you going?

I will continue to evolve my sound, always keeping faithful to my identity. We are only at the beginning!
