A high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at Palazzo Chigi reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to establishing migrant repatriation centers in Albania. The summit, held in response to a recent Court of Cassation ruling defining national authority over safe country designations, emphasized Italy’s determination to collaborate with EU partners. According to an official statement, the government will continue pursuing “innovative solutions” to address migration challenges, in line with the European Council conclusions from December 19. The meeting included Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani (remotely), Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, and other senior officials.
Speaking from Kosovo, where he was visiting the KFOR headquarters, Tajani reiterated the government’s intent to move forward with the Albania agreement. “This protocol aims to counter human trafficking while adhering to EU regulations,” he said. He highlighted the collective resolve expressed during the meeting with Meloni and other ministers to maintain a path that has garnered EU recognition as innovative.
Tajani also underscored the positive reception of these solutions by other nations, bolstered by the Court of Cassation’s recent ruling validating the government’s approach. “We will continue this work with calm and seriousness, confident in the effectiveness of these measures,” he stated.
