A severe road accident in Lido di Camaiore, on the busy Via Italica between the Aurelia and the seafront, has resulted in two deaths and six injuries. The incident occurred when a runaway Mercedes collided with other vehicles and then struck pedestrians.
Among the injured, three are in serious condition: two have been transported to Apuane Hospital in Massa, three to Versilia Hospital in Lido di Camaiore (including the driver of the car), and one has been airlifted to Cisanello Hospital in Pisa with a severe polytrauma. Emergency services, including 118, the Viareggio police, and firefighters, were on the scene. The most critically injured is the woman who was airlifted to Cisanello.
The vehicle was driven by a 44-year-old Brazilian woman, who was accompanied by a passenger. The Mercedes ran through two red lights at the intersections of Via Roma and Viale Colombo, hitting two German tourists, aged 18 and 19, at the first intersection. At the Viale Colombo junction, the car hit a group of French tourists before finally crashing into another vehicle near the Hotel Sirio on a parallel road to the seafront. The driver exited the car and awaited the arrival of traffic police.
The driver has been taken to Versilia Hospital for toxicology tests. Camaiore’s mayor, Marcello Pierucci, described the incident as deeply shocking, emphasizing the extraordinary speed of the vehicle and the extensive damage caused. “This is an unprecedented event for our community,” Pierucci stated on live TV. “The car, moving at an alarming speed, killed two people, injured five others, and damaged several parked cars. We immediately offered our municipal police’s support to the Viareggio police, who are leading the investigation.”
