Iconic Chimneys Demolished in Piombino, Marking New Era for the City

The dismantling of the former Enel power plant's chimneys paves the way for revitalization efforts

Today in Piombino, located in the province of Livorno along the Tyrrhenian Sea, the two 197-meter tall chimneys of the former Enel power plant at Torre del Sale were brought down. Originally operational since 1977 and decommissioned in 2015, the chimneys, weighing a total of 14,000 tons, were significant landmarks in the city’s skyline. Their demolition was carried out using micro-explosives in a carefully planned operation.

The revitalization plans for the former power plant include the creation of a thematic public park focused on the history of energy, designed to attract tourists to the region. Additionally, a partnership has been established with WWF to allocate a portion of the Enel-owned land for the creation of an oasis for barn swallows, a migratory bird species.

Present at the demolition was Eugenio Giani, the President of Tuscany and a member of the Democratic Party, who described the event as a “historic moment,” representing a “symbol of a new Piombino.”
