CAVE (ROMA) (ITALPRESS) – The increasing frequency of extreme events makes it necessary to adopt increasingly advanced tools to monitor the territory and support the prevention of environmental risks. With this objective it takes shape in Cave, in the province of Rome, the experimentation of PRISM-E, the project that integrates drones, sensors, satellite data and Artificial Intelligence to monitor the territory, quickly identify criticalities and support the prevention of fire and hydrogeological risk. PRISM-E is a research and development project co-funded by the Lazio Region under the Regional Programme Lazio 2021-2027. Capofila is TopNetwork, with ACGroup, CNR-IIA, Università degli Studi Guglielmo Marconi e Città di Cave, end-user and headquarters of the final certification in the operating environment, at level TRL 7.
The platform developed within the project integrates different information sources into a single digital ecosystem. AI continuously processes data acquired by satellites and sensors on the territory. When potentially critical abnormalities or situations are detected, the active retail relief system by drones, acquiring high-precision information. The integration of data allows you to build an updated digital representation of the territory, supporting predictive analysis and timely decisions.
The system operates on two levels. Sentinel-2 analyzes extended areas every five to six days with a resolution of 10 meters. On the critical zones, drones and IoT devices intervene, with lower resolution than the meter. An “electronic nose” detects volatile compounds precursors of events; the project provides alerts 24 hours in advance.
The cases of use are the prevention of landslides, fires and floods, through the evaluation of the susceptibility of the slopes, of the state of vegetation and of the potential fuel and of the variations in the use of soil; for floods the SAR technology, effective under conditions of poor visibility is also foreseen. Cave will be identified areas for satellite monitoring, flight tests and certification. The tests will verify connectivity, autonomous navigation and cooperative, data synchronization, chemical-environmental sensors, load capacity and flight in non-optimal weather conditions. Launched in June 2026, the project provides the final certification in March 2028.
“The PRISM-E project was born as a response to the STEP call from the Lazio Region and we are proud that it was admitted to co-financing with the ERDF funds – the comment of Luciano Ponticelli, Delivery Manager of TopNetwork -. We at TopNetwork will make it as a leader with many prestigious partners.”
“As the City of Cave we are excited to participate in this partnership among more institutions for the projectPRISM-E, which will give us the opportunity in the future to have an innovative and highly technological tool – said Roberto Urbani, Councillor for the Budget of the Municipality of Cave -. Thanks to this we will be able to monitor and anticipate the hydrogeological dissents that in recent years we have seen to create a series of inconveniences relevant throughout the city, from roads that have become impractical up to properties that have suffered structural damage.”
“The project will see from a technological point of view the use of different technologies starting from the analysis of satellite data to create real risk maps and the use of drones on the territory that will be able to analyze in a more capillary way actual risks posed and analyzed by the platform – Gianluca Zaccagnino, head of the Innovation Area of TopNetwork -. In addition, drones will also be equipped with advanced sensors that will be able to spot actual risks especially for fires. Finally, the project involves the installation of IoT sensors designed for hydroge riskological directly on the territory to be monitored”.
