Italy Secures Davis Cup Semifinal Spot with Double Triumph

A thrilling win against Argentina sets up a rematch with Australia in Malaga

Italy is heading to the Davis Cup semifinals after an electrifying doubles performance by Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini, who defeated Argentina’s Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni 6-4, 7-5. Despite being an unconventional pairing, the Italian duo held firm against the Argentine specialists, known for their Slam success this year. The pivotal moment came in the 11th game of the second set when a crucial break sealed the match. Berrettini, solid throughout, expressed his excitement: “This is an incredible moment. We played an amazing match against top doubles players, but this is just the beginning.” Sinner added that their synergy off the court played a key role in their success.

The journey wasn’t without its hurdles. Lorenzo Musetti’s opening match against Francisco Cerundolo ended in disappointment, with the Argentine winning decisively 6-4, 6-1. “I’m deeply frustrated,” admitted Musetti post-match. But Sinner restored hope in spectacular fashion, dominating Sebastian Baez with a resounding 6-2, 6-1 victory. The crowd at Malaga’s Palacio de Deportes erupted as Sinner delivered a masterclass, showcasing his precision and power. “We only have Jannik Sinner,” chanted Italian fans, as their star powered Italy back into contention.

Italy now faces Australia on Saturday in a highly anticipated semifinal, a replay of last year’s final. Team captain Filippo Volandri praised the squad’s effort and defended the decision to pair Sinner and Berrettini in doubles, despite leaving seasoned players like Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori on the bench. “It was a tough call, but it paid off,” Volandri said. With momentum on their side, the Italian team remains focused on continuing their Davis Cup dream.
